Classes or Subclasses Shown

Examples for all classes/subclasses are shown. Other variations within subclasses will exist.

For several of the examples shown, a quotation phrase such as "18th Century Mennecy Style" or "Kutani Style" is used where full consensus of the reviewers and contributors could not be reached on the actual date or maker for that button. Making such determinations from photographs is often problematic. In addition, some caution is advised for the backmark quotations since the existence of reproductions can challenge authenticity. Anyone who might be able to resolve these qualified labels is requested to send the pertinent information to the author at price6@comcast.net who will follow up on the input.

Acknowledgments

This Ceramics upgrade project would not be possible without the input of button images and quality reviews by a number of collaborators. They included Lou Yeargain, Barbara Barrans, Elizabeth Hughes, Elaine Cossman, Gary Brockman, Karen Farnsworth, Janel Marchi, Jean Rivers, and Joan Lindsay. Thanks to all. The author takes full responsibility for any errors in the classification examples. Potential labeling issues and questions should be directed to the author.

Notes for the Viewers

Scanning and photographing buttons have distinct limitations in the areas of perspective, color, details, and dimensions. Thus, many buttons do not reveal their true character and appearance in the photos or scans. When uncertainty exists, ask a fellow club member or a dealer to show you an actual example of the button in question.
